Sex might be something that (almost) every one does or at least thinks about doing. But how many people are actually talking about it?
What the Survey Found About Americans and Sex Talk
According to a web-based survey, more Americans than ever are comfortable talking about sex with their partner.
The survey conducted by an independent third-party questioned 2,000 American adults about multiple aspects of sex. It discovered roughly 85% of all Americans were comfortable discussing sexual preferences and boundaries with their partner.
Comfortable vs. Very Comfortable: The Generational Gap
The percentages trend higher for younger generations, including Gen Z (89%) and Millennials (90%). Gen X was right in the middle with 86%. Baby Boomers were a few steps behind the times with 74% saying they were comfortable.
The percentages, however, dropped substantially when asked if they were very comfortable talking about sex with their partner. Only around 60% of Gen Z and Millennials said they were. The percentages drop to less than half for both Millennials (49%) and Baby Boomers (37%). Apparently, there are certain things that people just aren’t comfortable sharing, even with their significant others.
Why Talking About Sex Matters for Your Relationship
On the bright side, this growing openness and acceptance toward sex is great for strengthening relationships. It allows couples to build a strong foundation for healthy, long-term partnerships.
“When it comes to sex and relationships, communication is always key,” says Dr. Jenni Skyler, PhD, LMFT, C-PST, and Adam & Eve’s resident sex therapist. “Even longtime partners are not mind readers, and desires, preferences and boundaries constantly change. Whether you are navigating a new relationship or in a 50-year marriage, the ability to discuss your wants and needs should remain a top priority.”
How to Get More Comfortable Talking About Sex
If you’re in the 15% of Americans who aren’t comfortable talking about sex and want to change that, there are several steps you can take.
Educate Yourself First
We recommend starting out by reading and learning more about it. The Adam & Eve Guide to Sex includes hundreds of friendly & helpful articles about sex in general, specific activities, and other things you need to know. Educating yourself about sex will boost your confidence and make talking about it with your partner much easier.
Break the Ice with Adult Games
You could also check out some adult games. They can make fantastic ice breakers when it comes to sex, whether your relationship is brand new or decades old. Our relationship experts strongly recommend Monogamy. Our most popular game balances engaging & revealing questions with spicy fantasies and dares. It’s also endorsed by leading health & sexpert Dr. Emily Morse. You & Me is our most highly rated game at the moment with a near-perfect 4.8 score. Product reviewer Sam reported, “We definitely enjoyed the game. It helped us bring back openness and communication in our bedroom.”
Consider Professional Guidance
If you need a more guided approach, try looking for a counselor or therapist in your area. The American Association of Sexuality Educators, Counselors and Therapists (AASECT) maintains an extensive database of licensed professionals that can help you and your lover.
Talking about sex with someone you love doesn’t need to be an awkward or difficult conversation. Try to make it a way for both of you to grow even closer together!
