Leather Penis Ring History

The History of Penis Rings

Since the dawn of history, guys have been searching for ways to make their penises bigger. We’ll never know the first guy who decided to tie something around his shaft, but men and women alike are forever in his debt.

Ancient Penis Rings
The first documented use of penis rings comes from ancient China when men would use a goat’s eyelid, including the eyelashes which were supposed to enhance her pleasure. Luckily for goats everywhere, future penis rings were mostly made from other materials including leather straps and sinew. Small bumps, which we call pleasure nubs today, eventually replaced the eyelashes as clitoral stimulators.

Penis rings soon became something of a status symbol. Men began commissioning more and more elaborate designs from expensive materials as they vied for the most impressive package. Several Chinese emperors commissioned penis rings made out of ivory or jade. European and Middle Eastern rulers liked their penis rings a little shinier, so they typically used gold or silver. Many of these early penis rings are modeled after the Ouroboros, an ancient symbol of a snake or a dragon eating their own tail that represents the cycle of life, death and rebirth. The Ouroboros is found in a number of ancient cultures. It’s incorporated in the Egyptian Book of the Dead, Norse mythology, the works of Plato and even Aztec temples. The Ouroboros would be adapted into the infinity symbol still used today.

Industrial Age Penis Rings
The rise of the industrial revolution in the 1800s saw the first mass-produced penis rings, which were made out of vulcanized rubber. While more flexible than wood or metal, the thick and stiff rubber was still difficult to put on and even harder to take off. It wasn’t until the development of softer and more flexible latex rubber in the 1930s that the penis ring really took off. Many of these latex rings were actually designed as gaskets and seals for automobiles, but they quickly made their way into the bedroom.

20th Century Penis Rings
The sexual revolution in the 1960s and ‘70s shifted the focus of penis rings from a male toy into one intended for couples. Penis rings began featuring pleasure nubs and teasers designed to increase her pleasure as well as his. But the biggest change came when sex toy makers developed mini vibrators – known today as bullet and egg vibes – that could fit onto a penis ring. Men and woman alike went crazy for the new vibrating penis rings, making them one of the most popular sex toys for couples. It’s a big improvement from using some vine in the woods and hoping it’s not poison ivy.
