Bondage Sex and Sex Toys

What is Bondage

Bondage is the use of restraints to increase sexual stimulation for both parties. During bondage, the “Dom” or dominant person restrains the “Sub” or submissive participant. Soft, flexible items can be used, such as ropes, silk scarves or soft cords for those beginning bondage play or who are looking to introduce bondage into their sex life. Other items such as collars, leg irons, handcuffs, stocks and similar restraint systems can be used as well by those who are more experienced in bondage play.

Adam and Eve encourages consenting adults to live a “Sex Positive” lifestyle which includes experimenting with sex toys, new sex positions and the like. That said Adam and Eve offers playful bondage toys and restraints geared towards bondage beginners. Communication is the most important element in any relationship be it sexual, emotional or professional so make sure you’re talking to your partner about what feels good, what feels safe and what is comfortable.

The history of bondage dates back as far as medieval Japan, with an art form known as Hojo-jutsu or Baku-jutsu, which consisted of capturing an enemy or restraining him with ropes as quickly as possible. This was later adopted by law enforcement officials and many different methods of tying were developed. These were used on lawbreakers and would differ based upon the criminal’s social status, profession and the sex of the prisoner.

Bondage Categories

Bondage can be broken down into sex main categories:

  • • Bondage that binds or pulls part of the body together, such as ropes or harnesses
  • • Bondage that spreads parts of the body apart, such as spreader bars or x-frames
  • • Bondage that holds the body down to an object such as a chair, or stocks
  • • Bondage that suspends the body from another object
  • • Bondage that restricts normal movement, such as handcuffs
  • • Bondage that wraps the whole body or part of it in bindings such as cloth or saran wrap

Bondage can be as simple or as elaborate as you want to make it. Verbal bondage requires no special sex toys or sex furniture. In verbal bondage, the Dom tells the Sub to hold a position. Other simple bondage techniques include tying the hands in front or behind the body, or anchoring the arms to the sides of the body.

More experienced bondage participants may enjoy the use of specialized sex furniture which is much more restrictive, such as an x-frame or stocks. An x-frame is a table shaped like the letter X, with cuffs at each corner for restraining the participant’s hands and feet. Stocks, once used in medieval times to publicly display criminals, consist of two large hinged boards with holes for the hands, feet or head.

Any kind of bondage play can be enhanced with the use of sex toys. Vibrators, dildos, anal sex toys and butt plugs can all be used during bondage play to increase sexual stimulation. Other non-typical sex toys such as blindfolds, feathers (or “ticklers”) and paddles can add different sensations as well.

Bondage Safety Precautions

There are certain safety precautions to consider when using bondage. One of the most important is the creation of a “safe word” which is a clear way for the person who is bound to express that they wish to stop or temporarily suspend the activities of the bondage play. A person who is bound should never be left alone. Although it might be tempting to let the bound person “stew” one has to consider other possibilities – what if there is a fire or the house is broken in to? The subject should be able to be released quickly in case of an emergency. Both parties should be sober and refrain from the use of alcohol or drugs during bondage play. Although bound, the subject should change positions at least once every hour to prevent circulation problems. A good practice is to frequently ask if the subject is okay. Any numbness or coldness in the hands or feet, or discoloration of any part of the skin is a sign that blood circulation has been blocked. Keeping these simple precautions in mind will allow bondage to be as pleasurable as possible for both parties.
