For International Masturbation Month this May, Adam & Eve asked 2,000 American adults whether their solo orgasms or their partnered ones were stronger. This web-based survey was part of a larger overall study conducted by an independent third-party partner to determine sexual preferences and practices.
Almost 19% of people said masturbation orgasms were definitely better. Of those responding, women were twice as likely as men to prefer relying on their own hands or toys to take care of business.
When it comes to partnered sex, 39% said it was more enjoyable, making it the clear winner. This time the genders were completely switched. Men were twice as likely as women to prefer sex with a partner.
And 27% of survey respondents reported finding similar pleasure in masturbation and partnered sex. The results were almost equally split between men and women.
So, what makes some people turn to masturbation more than others?
“It’s important to remember that people seek solo satisfaction for many different reasons,” said Adam & Eve’s resident sex therapist Dr. Jenni Skyler, PhD, LMFT, C-PST. “Some participate to relax, de-stress or help fall asleep, others enjoy exploring their own bodies to see what works for them so that they can communicate that to their partners. Some people have a higher sex drive than their partners or are between relationships. Whatever the reason, self-love truly is self-care in action.”
