Whether you’re spending the night with your partner or flying solo, the right lube can mean the difference between good sex and great sex. Thankfully, you can find the right sex lube just by asking yourself three simple questions.
What do I need lube for?
Regardless of your answer, there’s a sex lube out there made just for you. Anal sex lubes are thicker and longer-lasting than other types of lubes out of necessity since the anus doesn’t produce any natural lubricant. Masturbation lubes are designed to handle high friction so you can use them on your own or with sex toys. Flavored lubes turn oral sex into a tasty treat. Tingling lubes can provide additional stimulation during sex. Waterproof silicone lubes let you have sex in the shower or pool without wearing off. Warming lubes actually heat up for a soothing massage or additional thrills. And of course, there are basic lubes for people who just want to have sex.
Which type of sex lube do I need?
After deciding how you’re going to use the lube, you need to figure out which type you need. There are four main types of sex lubes. Water-based lubes are affordable and safe to use with all types of sex toys and condoms but don’t last as long as other types. Oil-based lubes are thick and long-lasting but cause stains and can’t be used with condoms. Silicone-based lubes are waterproof and won’t leave a sticky texture, but they can’t be used with silicone toys. Hybrid lubes last longer than water-based lubes but shouldn’t be used with silicone toys.
Do I have any special requirements or needs?
Lubes contain a wide variety of chemicals, preservatives and other ingredients. If you have any allergies, you should always carefully examine the lube’s ingredient list to make sure it won’t cause an adverse reaction. It’s also important to examine the label and packaging if you have any special dietary restrictions. While most lubes contain artificial ingredients, there are more and more all-organic lubes on the market. You can even find lubes made specifically for vegans and kosher lubes for Orthodox Jews!
If All Else Fails…
If you’ve gone through all the questions and still can’t find the right sex lube, then just go with a general water-based lube. Water-based lubes are extremely affordable and 100% compatible with condoms and all types of sex toys. They’re odor-free and won’t stain your sheets. The only downside is that water-based lubes don’t last as long as other types, but you can always apply more to keep things running smoothly.
